Aspen

Aspen was a multidimensional multimedia magazine from an age far away but still close enough to touch. The magazine was delivered to subscribers from 1965 to 1971 in a box often containing a variety of media: printed matter in different formats, phonograph recordings, and even a reel of Super-8 film.

‘All the artists are such shadowy characters,” the publisher said, “that it takes months to track them down.â€?

And this gives us some clues as to the type of content and sort of people who contributed to Aspen – some of the most interesting and intriguing artists of the 20th Century!

There are works from Angus Maclise, Richard Alpert and John Cage to name a few. Some key moments and movements are documented too – Fluxus, Minimalism and the Psychedelic Movement.

Favourites so far include The Psychedelic issue, The Fluxus issue, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy’s Lightplay, John Cage’s annotations for Fontana Mix which often spins on the Dataisnature decks and stills from the wonderful ‘Invasion of the Thunderbolt Pagoda’ a film by Ira Cohen.
